What "Grain" Actually Means
Every hide has layers. The grain is the outermost layer — the surface that carried the animal's hair and shows the natural pore pattern. Full-grain leather keeps that layer completely intact, with only the hair removed. Top-grain leather has the outer layer lightly sanded or buffed to remove imperfections, then often finished with a protective coating or embossed texture to create a uniform surface. Both are genuine, full-thickness leather — the difference is what happens to the surface, not whether it is "real."

A fashion-forward jacket, a structured bag, or a lower price-point accessory line often performs better on top-grain, because the sanded, coated surface takes color and embossing more evenly and costs less per square foot.
